Virtus et Potestas

(TEASER/TRAILER)

Encountering this warrior riding a giant toad will no doubt leave you wondering if you have walked into a dark fairytale or are stuck in a surreal nightmare. Something so scary and so strange couldn’t be of this world, and yet every aspect of it is inspired by the world we live in. A stranger thing for the scary times we live in!

Artist Jean Pronovost reveals his latest sculpture

Sculptor and painter Jean Pronovost, in his directorial debut, presents his latest artwork. Virtus et Potestas, his latest large-scale sculpture, a striking and profound reflexion on today’s world dilemmas.

Storytelling has always played an utterly important role in my art, making this movie was for me the next logical step to go further in contextualizing even more the symbolic meaning of my sculpture. It was made to push my limit and extrapolate, with the help of the cinematographical medium, the story I tell already with my art in a more vivid way.

Jean Pronovost was born in Quebec City in 1976, and has lived and worked in Montreal for the past 25 years. He is a self-taught, versatile fine art painter and sculptor; a multidisciplinary artist who is skilled in all types of paint, materials, and scale. Gathering inspiration from ancient mythology and old civilization, Jean generates profound and timeless allegories through figures and landscapes that motivate deep self-reflection and contemplation. Each piece he creates weaves intricate layers of symbolism, striking beauty, an imaginative fusion of the real and fantastical, and a good dose of wit and dark humor.

He worked as a set dresser and Production Designer on different short movies and commercials for many years before finally deciding to direct his first movie with Virtus and Potestas.

TALES FROM THE PLASTIC ISLAND salon de la sculpture

To say this sculpture is epic is an understatement. So many components to it and so many messages to take in; every inch has something to inspire deep thought. There’s beauty, and there are beasts. Like all great allegories, she’s got a great tale to tell you and at the end of it all a powerful lesson or two to learn.
